Is Shea Butter comedogenic?
Everything You’ve Wanted to Know About Shea Butter
Is shea butter safe and good for your face? At NB We don’t just want your skin to be clear, we want your knowledge of our products to be clear as well! As scientific evidence advances there are more studies done, all with what seems to be conflicting information. To truly understand how shea butter works we will be addressing shea butter throughout its many stages: what it is, how it has been utilized, and if it is comedogenic (will it clog your pores).
What is Shea butter?
To begin our journey into shea butter, and to understand exactly how shea butter works, it is important to know how it is derived. Shea nuts grow from trees known as Vitellaria paradox, commonly known as a shea tree. Each tree produces nuts, which are brown in color and are referred to as shea nuts. Shea Butter is made by utilizing the shea tree nuts, once prepared by crunching and boiling at high heat the byproduct is a yellow fat that can be used for multiple purposes. While the process may seem easy just like extracting any other type of oil it does require some labor, time, and materials.
How can it be used?
As shea is natural it can be ingested (seen in a majority of chocolate) or used topically. Most often the product is used as a moisturizer in products although its true usefulness extends well beyond this one function. The use of shea goes back hundreds of years, but in more recent years some of the benefits science has discovered include 3 main uses anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant effects, and skin barrier repair.
Anti-inflammatory: Agents within the ingredient itself naturally creates a chemical process that keeps skin from breaking out.
Antioxidant effects: Shea butter contains a few different vitamins (A, E, and F) that lend to healthy skin and circulation. Shea butter promotes healthy skin production and better blood flow to maintain younger, smoother-looking (and feeling) skin!
Skin barrier: Shea butter works well because one of its benefits is it naturally absorbs into your skin while being water-resistant, this creates a type of barrier that keeps dirt out and moisture in. Fun fact, shea butter mimics naturally occurring skin oils in humans (stearic acid and oleic) and gives a more natural feel to the skin.
While the benefits of shea do go deeper these are a few examples of how this item is utilized in our skin products.
Is Shea Butter Comedogenic?
To answer the most important question, is shea butter comedogenic (does it clog pores)? The answer is simply no, shea butter is non-comedogenic. While some studies have found a very small percentage of people who use it may experience the symptoms of clogged pores, shea butter and its properties overall are not considered to be comedogenic.
Who Can Benefit from Using Shea Butter?
Many people can (and do) benefit from shea butter, especially those with dry, irritated, or undernourished skin!
